[Food Review] Plaza Brasserie Special – Feast of Flourish @ PARKROYAL BEACH ROAD (2016 CNY)

20160205_214954Plaza Brasserie is no stranger to many buffet lovers, and is a popular destination for many groups, ranging from couples to extended families. Located along Beach Road (near Bugis) within the classy Park Royal Hotel, this restaurant whips up some really impressive dishes.

Special Review – As we enter this festive season, the chefs in Plaza Brasserie have come up with several special dishes to celebrate this Lunar New Year with us! I took this opportunity for CNY 2016 to head down to Plaza Brasserie to have a filling dinner on a friday evening. Lets jump straight into it!

Lets have a run through of the overview of today’s buffet first!

Salad Bar – mostly unpatronised by customers through the buffet…

Indian cuisine – rice with 3 different types of curry (fish, chicken, vegetables) [Another cold area in the buffet]

Live cooking section – one of the most popular station (its where the Yu Sheng, Buddha Jump over the Wall, Laksa and many other amazing dishes can be found)

Japanese Station with their sushi rolls and fresh sashimi cut on the spot by a chef

Roasted meat section, seafood on ice, appetisers

CNY specials – Braised Pork Knuckle, Eight Treasure Duck, Sticky Rice, Steam Chicken with Mushroom, Braised Sea Cucumber
(missing in the photo – Cereal Prawn, Kai Lan, vegetables with dried oysters)

Cheese and bread station – you wouldn’t believe the number of selections in front of you

CNY special – mini Buddha Jumps over the Wall

A bowl of heavenly goodness, abalone, sea cucumber, dried scallops, mushrooms in a fragrant herbal broth. What else can be said? Nothing else but the fact that I had 3 whole bowls of it. Three. For this buffet, one is entitled to unlimited number of bowls of this soupy delight, so feel free to down as many bowls as you want to! (not advisable though)

Author’s note: for the second and third bowl, the abalone tasted a little… fake…

Appetiser Plate

For the appetisers, the salads were pretty normal, I took the sweet potato and prawns one, not too bad but nothing outstanding.

Cheesy baked scallops – well this was a nice combination, creamy cheese overflowing the warm scallops and literally melting in your mouth, well you get the idea.

CNY specials plate

The CNY specials were generally quite good home cooked Chinese food – beware though: as with all Chinese delicacies they tend to be on the oilier side.

Two of the dishes were my favourites – Sea Cucumber and Pork Knuckles

The sea cucumber dish is a pretty premium Chinese delicacy (pretty expensive too), and I must say the one done here is really not too bad, the smooth and chewy texture made it easy to eat, and the sauce complements it nicely.

Pork Knuckles – this dish was really fatty, you simply have to choose the one that doesn’t only have all fats to enjoy the meat that was really well done, but this dish was really done very well, with the sweet and sour black vinegar complementing the pork knuckles, this serves as a perfect appetiser to make you want to eat more.

Soft Shell Crabs – a wonderful delight, meaty and crunchy

Chilli crab – Singapore’s favourite dish

Piping hot Chilli Crab claw paired with a perfectly fried Golden Mantou – simply heavenly.

Cheese. Biscuits. Bread. Shoutout to all cheese lovers! I had loads of fun trying out the various cheese and particularly took a liking to Brie 😛 (trying to be a cheese connoisseur here)

Good old bowl of laksa with a rich broth and complete ingredients (…and the nice chef gave me extra eggs when I requested it!)

The raw stuff – freshly shucked oysters and freshly cut sashimi

Amazing spread of deserts! (missing the ice creams – Green Tea, Coconut, Durian)

The spread of deserts were really extensive and impressive, and they were replenished quickly whenever they ran out. Some of the deserts were gluten free too!

CNY special – in addition to the normal deserts, they had a couple of CNY snacks such as love letters and pineapple tarts, etc.

Coconut Cake

Special mention: Coconut Cake

This was a rather well done desert, with real coconut meat layered between soft sponge cake and showered with cream and coconut flakes – a desert nicely executed and not easily found elsewhere!

A must try!

If you are looking for a good meal this CNY (or really any other time of the year) make your way down now to Plaza Brasserie!
